OMVIC Practice Test 2026 – Complete Exam Prep Guide

To operate legally as a motor vehicle dealer in Ontario, obtaining a valid dealer registration from OMVIC (the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council) is essential. OMVIC is responsible for regulating the provincial motor vehicle sales industry, ensuring that dealers comply with the rules and standards set forth in the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act. This registration serves as a legal requirement that helps protect consumers by ensuring that dealers are qualified to conduct business and are aware of their obligations, such as adhering to regulations regarding sales practices, advertising, and consumer protections.

While the presence of an active storefront location or employing a certified mechanic may contribute to a dealer's operations and customer service quality, these factors are not mandatory conditions for legal operation. Additionally, registration with the Ministry of Transportation is typically related to vehicle ownership and licensing rather than the dealer's ability to sell vehicles. Hence, the acquisition of a valid dealer registration from OMVIC is the primary legal requirement for motor vehicle dealers in Ontario.
